Welcome to the official site of THATCamp Caribe 2012, bringing the Technology and Humanities Camp to the Caribbean in November! A THATCamp is an unconference. There are no papers, no pre-conceived panels, no keynote speaker. To read more about the THATCamp model, visit the FAQ page. The goal of THATCamp Caribe 2012 is to bring together digital humanists with scholars, librarians, artists, technologists and tinkerers to imagine the future of digital humanities in the Caribbean broadly-understood.
We are at a crossroads. New technologies have reshaped our academic landscapes, and just as new doors open, new challenges follow close behind. THATCamp Caribe 2012 hopes to address these vertiginous changes within the context of the Caribbean and its diaspora. How does open-access impact small Caribbean presses? What are the best approaches to remediate our fragile archives? What is the current state of Caribbean digital scholarship? How can we build an online community of digital Caribbeanists? How can we revolutionize, rather than assimilate into the new technologies? These are just some of the many questions we can ask and answer together. You do not need to be conversant with the new technologies to join us, you just need to be curious and eager to collaborate.
THATCamp Caribe 2012 will be hosted by the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. Sessions will be held in English and Spanish, depending on the demand. The event will take place November 12-14. The first day, Monday, will be the traditional workshop, where participants can learn basic and advanced skills. The actual unconference will begin Tuesday and Wednesday. We chose those dates to make it easier for those who are also participating in the American Studies Association 2012 annual meeting, which is taking place in San Juan from the 15th to the 18th. We are in close collaboration with the ASA to make it easy to participate in both.
